Radiation Instrumentation Steering Committee
It is June and we are only a little over a month away from the first RITC conference in 2024 – SCINT2024 in Bicocca, Milan, Italy. A detailed description of the conference is provided separately in this newsletter. Note that we are about three weeks before conference registration formally closes.
Later in 2024, Tampa (Florida, USA), will host the 2024 NSS/MIC/RTSD conference. The conference organizing committee, chaired by Lorenzo Fabris, is working hard to put in place an exciting hybrid event. While abstract submission has already closed, early registration and a preliminary program are expected in a few weeks. I encourage everyone to check the conference website (https://nssmic.ieee.org/2024/) for the most recent updates and make use of the reduced early conference registration fees.
Nominations for the Annual NPSS-RITC awards that will be presented at the 2024 conference in Tampa are also open. Awards include:
- The Radiation Instrumentation Early Career Award (RIECA) – given to a young investigator in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions to the fields of radiation instrumentation and measurement techniques for ionizing radiation. The prize consists of US$1,500 and an engraved plaque. The past recipients of the RIECA can be found on the Radiation Instrumentation Technical Committee (RITC) web page.
- The Emilio Gatti Radiation Instrumentation Technical Achievement Award (RITAA) – recognizing a midcareer individual who has made significant and innovative technical contributions in the field of radiation detectors, radiation instrumentation, and/or nuclear electronics, and/or measurement techniques for ionizing radiation. The prize consists of US$2,000 and an engraved plaque. The past recipients of the RITAA can be found on the Radiation Instrumentation Technical Committee (RITC) web page.
- The prestigious Glenn F. Knoll Radiation Instrumentation Outstanding Achievement Award (RIOAA) – given to an individual in recognition of outstanding and enduring contributions to the field of radiation instrumentation. The prize consists of $3,000 and an engraved plaque. The past recipients of the RIOAA can be found on the RITC web page.
The July 15th deadline is soon approaching, so please consider nominating a deserving colleague. Nominations are to be sent to the current RISC Awards Chair, John Valentine ([email protected]).
This year, IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is announcing the new IEEE WIE Family Cares Grant. The grant was established to promote and enable attendance at IEEE conferences, especially by persons whose financial obligations to care for family members may prevent their attendance, by covering the cost of their family care responsibilities (children, seniors, disabled) up to $1,000 USD. As the grant is new, I would encourage anyone eligible to check the website (https://wie.ieee.org/grants-scholarships/family-cares-grant/) for deadlines and pertinent information.
Also, a reminder that five members from the radiation instrumentation technical community are elected to a three-year member-at-large position in the Radiation Instrumentation Steering Committee (RISC). We are actively seeking nominations for the 2025-2027 term. There are several members in our community who can contribute to this role. Please nominate yourself or an interested colleague. Nominations should be emailed to Christer Fröjdh ([email protected]).
