Radiation Effects Annual Report

Kay Chesnut, chair of the Radiation Effects Steering Group

The IEEE Radiation Effects Committee (REC) held its annual Open Meeting on July 25th at the 2024 Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conference (NSREC) in Ottawa, Canada. The meeting was chaired by Kay Chesnut, chair of the Radiation Effects Steering Group, which oversees NSREC Conferences. Presentations were given by the general chairs of the 2024 through 2025 NSRECs and the chair of the 2024 and 2025 European Conference on Radiation and its Effects on Components and Systems (RADECS) as well as the 2025 plans for the International Conference on Radiation Effects of Electronic Devices (ICREED) which will be held in Yangzhou, China.

Robert Reed, Vanderbilt University (now Past Chair), opened the meeting by recognizing this year’s awards before handing off leadership to Kay Chesnut. Topics covered included newly elected and appointed members of the Radiation Effects Steering Group (RESG) and future conferences. The elected members of the 2024 RESG are Heather Quinn, AFRL, Vice Chair; Robert Reed, Vanderbilt University, Past Chair; Elizabeth Auden, LANL, Secretary. Robert recognized Mike Tostanoski, Radiation Test Solutions, as an outgoing member of the RESG. Megan Casey will take over as Senior Member-at-Large and Laurent Artola will take over as Member-at-Large. An election was held to determine the new Junior Member-at-Large; Justin Likar, JHU/APL, was elected. Robert also recognized the elected members of the IEEE NPSS AdCom: Marty Shaneyfelt, Sandia (ret.). (term ends in 2026) and Philippe Paillet, CEA (term ends in 2025).

Kay announced the general chairs for future NSREC Conferences: Dolores Black, Sandia National Laboratories, 2025, Philippe Paillet, CEA, 2026, Jonny Pellish, NASA, 2027 and Pascale Gouker, MIT/LL, 2028.

Heather Quinn, the General Chair of the 2024 Conference, summarized statistics of this year’s conference. A total of 414 people registered for the technical sessions and 302 people registered for the short course. The NSREC 2024 was held in person from July 22nd – 26th at the Shaw Centre, Ottawa, Canada. The technical sessions featured 141 papers that were presented during the five-day conference: 42 oral presentations, 47 poster presentations, and 52 poster presentations in the Radiation Effects Data Workshop. Four tutorial presentations were given at the Short Course, held July 22nd.

Dolores Black, General Chair of the 2025 Conference, discussed her plans for the 2025 Conference that will take place in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel, on July 14th – 18th, 2025. The conference will feature a technical program with 10 sessions of contributed papers that will describe the latest observations and research results in radiation effects. The program will include oral and poster papers, with a separate dedicated poster session where authors of poster papers can discuss their results with conference attendees. A Radiation Effects Data Workshop and an Industrial Exhibit will be held. Attendees will also be able to participate in a one-day Short Course on Monday, July 14th where an outstanding group of technical experts will provide an in-depth discussion of Radiation Effects in Modern and Emerging Technologies.
