Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee
Welcome and Thank You
I would like to give a quick introduction, as I took over as chair for the 2024-2025 Term for the Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee (PPST). I would like to give a huge thank you to the outgoing chair, Heather O’Brien, for her mentorship and help during this transition. I am looking forward to serving the committee as the chair, and working with Jacob Stephens, who is the new Vice Chair for PPST. I would also like to welcome the incoming committee members whose 4-year terms started in 2024: Simon Bland, Joshua Leckbee, Johanna Neuber, and David Wetz. Thank you to the outgoing members: Luis Redondo, Josh Gilbrech, Hong-Je Ryoo, and Georg Mueller.
Upcoming Conferences
We look forward to seeing everyone at the 10th Euro-Asian Pulsed Power Conference (EAPPC 2024), the 25th International Conference on High-Power Particle Beams (BEAMS 2024), and the 20th International Symposium on Electromagnetic Launch Technology (EML 2024) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from September 22 – 26, 2024. EAPPC-BEAMS-EML 2024 is organized by Eindhoven University of Technology with Guus Pemen as the General Chair and Jun Li as the EML Chair. Technical Chairs are Tom Huiskamp for EAPPC, Bucur Novac for BEAMS, and Xinjie Yu for EML. This conference will feature 3.5 days of discussion on research and applications with respect to pulsed power technology, high-power particle beams, and electromagnetic launch technology. Registration opens on June 15, 2024. Please visit their website (www.eappc-beams-eml2024.org) for more information.
Please save the date for our combined PPC 2025 and ICOPS 2025. Pulsed Power and Plasma Science (PPPS) 2025 will be held at the Hotel Estrel in Berlin, Germany, June 15-20, 2025. The general chair is Georg Muller from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Technical Chairs are Tom Huiskamp for PPC and Simon Bland for ICOPS.
PPST Awards
Please consider nominating outstanding students and colleagues to the PPST awards. There are three PPST level awards, two of which are biennial and up for nomination in 2024:
Erwin Marx Award
- The Erwin Marx award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to pulsed power technology for at least 10 years
- Biennial award, up for nomination this year
- Prize of $3,000 and a plaque
- Submission deadline: December 1
Peter Haas Award
- The Peter Haas Award recognizes outstanding contributions to pulsed power technology resulting from an individual’s continued effort to develop programs of research, education, and information exchange that are the basis for progress in pulsed power.
- Biennial award, up for nomination this year
- Prize of $3,000 and a plaque
- Submission deadline: December 1
Arther H. Guenther Pulsed Power Student Award
- The Award is to recognize outstanding contributions as a student in pulsed power engineering, science or technology. A recipient is selected each year but awarded biennially at the Pulsed Power Conference Banquet.
- Annual award
- Prize of $2,000 and a certificate
- Submission deadline: December 1
NPSS Awards
There are an additional two annual NPSS level awards related to pulsed power that we invite you to consider nominating outstanding graduate students and colleagues.
Robert J Barker Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Pulsed Power Applications
- The Barker award recognizes and enables outstanding graduate students enrolled in an accredited MS or Ph.D. level research program in the field of nuclear and plasma sciences, in pulsed power applications with preference given to medical and environmental applications and to compact pulsed power research and applications.
- Prize of $3,000, travel up to $500, and a plaque. Presentation at an IEEE NPSS society conference, preferably at the IEEE Pulsed Power Conference
- Deadline for submission: January 31
Magne “Kris” Kristiansen Award for Contributions to Experimental Nuclear and Plasma Science
- The Kristiansen award recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions in experimental nuclear and plasma science with preference given to areas within the broadest scope of plasma sciences encompassing the generation of strong pulsed electromagnetic fields including their interaction with plasmas and other pulsed power applications.
- Prize of $2,000 and a plaque. Presentation at an NPSS conference specified by the recipient.
- Deadline for submission: January 31
