Update from the Nuclear Medical and Imaging Sciences Committee (NMISC)

Youngho Seo, NMISC Chair

The second quarter of 2025 for our technical committee is the period for our newly joined and seasoned elected members to engage in specific activities within Nuclear Medical and Imaging Sciences Committee (NMISC).

Currently, the most active effort is to update our constitution and bylaws (CBL), which is headed by immediate past NMISC chair, Andrew Goertzen. Since the CBL is a set of governing principles and rules that are designed to sustain for a long period of time, the focus is to make updates to the languages and outdated rules and procedures. One example is that there is a consolidation effort of naming convention of our technical committee as Nuclear Medical Imaging Sciences Committee (NMISC) and the elective NMISC as an executive committee (ExCom) who runs NMISC for our technical committee’s community within NPSS. The formal process of posting a public notice to make these updates happen, etc. is well underway. NMISC also plans to have its mid-year meeting in June.

At the same time, since NMISC has inherently strong ties with RISC, we have been communicating on all matters related to our combined efforts such as the governing principles, naming conventions, the roles and functions, and most importantly for the conference oversight.

More information on NMISC activities is available at https://ieee-npss.org/technical-committees/nuclear-medical-and-imaging-sciences/

Recently, NMISC has learned that several members in the NMISC community were chosen as winners of NPSS-level awards. Customary to the NPSS-level award winners, the NPSS Awards chair, Steven Meikle, and this year’s Medical Imaging Conference (MIC) program chairs, Taiga Yamaya and Jae Sung Lee, have been arranging for the award winners to be presented these awards at our upcoming MIC plenary sessions. We expect that it will be full of excitement and appreciation for these award winners in our community at our most significant conference, MIC, giving their award speeches and presentations. NMISC-level awards will be also determined before the MIC, and we are looking forward to strong candidate pools.

Joint Oversight Subcommittee (JOS), the subcommittee of NMISC and RISC, continues to make impact for the future site selection of Nuclear Science Symposium, Medical Imaging Conference and Room-Temperature Semiconductors Symposium (NSS/MIC/RTSD). The current effort is to recommend the most suitable and preferred site for the 2028 NSS/MIC/RTSD. The JOS chair, Michael Lerch, has set a timeline for this process, and leads the group made of NMISC and RISC representatives. At the most recent meeting of JOS, we re-confirmed our commitment to selecting a site that is attractive to our attendees as well as cost effective so that there is no significant financial barrier to attend the conference. It may sound trivial; however, considering the diverse group of our attendees for the three conferences (NSS, MIC, and RTSD) being held together, this is indeed a big task, and we appreciate the voluntary efforts of our members in JOS.

Another important news from NMISC is that NPSS, upon the recommendation of NMISC, has formally appointed a new NMISC representative, Kris Thielemans at University College London to IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging (TMI) Steering Committee. The recently appointed editor-in-chief for TMI, Ge Wang at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, shared his visions for the journal, and we hope that our two NMISC representatives, Jinyi Qi at University of California, Davis, and Kris Thielemans, will contribute significantly on behalf of our community.

As reported multiple times before by us, and EduCom, the organization for the medical imaging-focused NPSS School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, which will be held from August 13th – 18th, is moving along well with the student candidates applying to the school through a web portal. We are at the final stage of the program organization, and selecting instructors.

Finally, the most important item to report is about our upcoming conference, MIC. The 2025 NSS/MIC/RTSD opened its abstract submission site, with the due date on May 8th, meaning that by the time of publication of this newsletter, we will know the number of abstracts and where these abstracts were submitted from, important information we are keen on learning so that we can plan our future conferences better. Our current prediction that there will be a strong turnout for this conference in Yokohama, Japan for several factors related to this positive forecast.
