On the morning of June 17^th, 2024, the ICOPS & APCOPTS 2024 NPSS Chapters in China event was successfully held at the Beijing International Convention Center. The IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) is an annual conference coordinated by the Plasma Science and Applications Committee (PSAC) of the IEEE Nuclear & Plasma Sciences Society (NPSS) — the largest and most academically influential international conference in the field of plasma science.

ICOPS 2024, held in Asia for the third time, is the first pioneering conference to be hosted in China. The Asia-Pacific Conference on Plasma and Terahertz Science (APCOPTS) is supported by NPSS and represents an international meeting point for the integration of plasma science and terahertz fields. It also serves as the Asian version of the ICOPS conference, occurring biennially. The conference was organized by NPSS, China Electrotechnical Society, and Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, with Professor Tao Shao serving as the chairman of the conference.

The ICOPS & APCOPTS 2024 NPSS Chapters in China event was hosted by Dr. Steven Gold, Co-Chair, NPSS Chapters and Local Activities Committee. Professor John Verboncoeur from Michigan State University, former President of IEEE NPSS, Professor Chao Chang from Xi’an Jiaotong University, the Chair of the NPSS Xi’an Section Chapter, Professors Zhi Fang and Feng Liu from Nanjing Tech University, the co-Chairs of the NPSS Nanjing Section Chapter, Professor Yuhui Li from the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the representative of the NPSS Beijing Section Chapter, and Professor Zhaoyun Duan from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, the Chair of NPSS Chengdu Section Chapter, participated in the event.

At the beginning, Professor Verboncoeur delivered a speech, highlighting that NPSS was committed to establishing chapters around the world to foster local activities and technical exchanges in relevant fields, thereby enhancing the comprehensive capabilities of its members. Then, Dr. Steven Gold presented a report titled “NPSS chapters and the history of NPSS chapters in China,” which outlined the functions of the NPSS, its affiliated journals, regularly scheduled conferences, and the development history of the NPSS chapters across China. Following this, Professor Verboncoeur and Dr. Steven Gold awarded plaques to the NPSS Chapters in Xi’an, Nanjing, Beijing, and Chengdu, and commemorated the occasion with a group photo.

This event enhanced the understanding of ICOPS & APCOPTS 2024 participants about NPSS chapters and promoted awareness of IEEE NPSS and its Chinese chapters.
