On July 5, 2024, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) had the great honor to host Dr. Steven H. Gold under the warm invitation of Professor Zhaoyun Duan, the founding Chair of the IEEE NPSS (Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society) Chengdu Chapter. Dr. Gold, an IEEE Life Fellow for his accomplishments in the field of plasma science and applications and currently Co-Chair of the IEEE NPSS Chapters and Local Activities committee, delivered a wonderful lecture to faculty members and students.

Dr. Gold commenced his presentation by charting the formation and evolution of the IEEE and its NPSS. He provided a historical narrative of the International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) and the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science (TPS), underscoring their pivotal milestones and contributions over the past fifty years.

In an exploration of the IEEE NPSS Chapters Program, Dr. Gold expounded on its strategic goals, organizational structure, and its indispensable role in fostering scientific collaboration and innovation. He lauded the establishment of the four NPSS chapters in China, highlighting their significant contributions to the global plasma science community.

The event offered a remarkable opportunity for UESTC’s academic community to engage with Dr. Gold’s profound expertise and insights, fortifying the collaborative relationship between IEEE NPSS and the IEEE NPSS Chengdu Chapter. The lecture not only enriched the attendees’ understanding but also inspired further advancements in the field of plasma science and applications.
