Upcoming Conferences

We look forward to seeing everyone at the 10th Euro-Asian Pulsed Power Conference (EAPPC 2024), the 25th International Conference on High-Power Particle Beams (BEAMS 2024), and the 20th International Symposium on Electromagnetic Launch Technology (EML 2024) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from September 22nd – 26th, 2024. EAPPC-BEAMS-EML 2024 is organized by Eindhoven University of Technology with Guus Pemen as the General Chair and Jun Li as the EML Chair. Technical Chairs are Tom Huiskamp for EAPPC, Bucur Novac for BEAMS, and Xinjie Yu for EML. This conference will feature three and a half days of discussion on research and applications with respect to pulsed power technology, high-power particle beams, and electromagnetic launch technology. Please visit their website for more information.

Please save the date for our combined PPC 2025 and ICOPS 2025. Pulsed Power and Plasma Science (PPPS) 2025 will be held at the Hotel Estrel in Berlin, Germany, June 15th – 20th, 2025. The general chair is Georg Müller from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Technical Chairs are Tom Huiskamp for PPC and Simon Bland for ICOPS. This conference will feature five days of discussion on research in pulsed power switches, components, systems, plasmas, charged particle beams, power electronics, and fusion. Abstract submission is planned for early fall 2024 and registration will open in early 2025. Please visit the conference website for additional information.

Congratulations to the winners of the Arther H. Guenther Pulsed Power Student Award

The Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee (PPST) is thrilled to name two winners for the 2024 IEEE Arthur H. Guenther Pulsed Power Student Award. From a strong field of nominations, these two students impressed our committee with their outstanding contributions to pulsed power research.

Max Flynn was recognized for excellent academic achievements

Max Flynn, Ph.D., May 2024, Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX USA, is recognized for excellent academic achievements and the impact of his research in the greater pulsed power community. The community especially benefits from Dr. Flynn’s refinement and open distribution of Boltzmann code and his modeling and experimentation of breakdown. His advisor at Texas Tech was Dr. Jacob Stephens.

Zhigang Liu, Ph.D., June 2024, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, is recognized for comprehensive fundamental research and extensive publications and honors. Dr. Zhigang Liu’s numerical simulations and experimental measurement of the generation and symmetry of converging shockwave formation from exploding underwater wire arrays contributes to the understanding of ultrahigh pressure formation. His advisor at Tsinghua University was Prof. Xiaobing Zou.

We thank all of the pulsed power community members who submitted nominations this past year. We are currently accepting nominations for the 2025 IEEE PPST Awards, including the IEEE Arthur H. Guenther Pulsed Power Student Award (due December 15th), the IEEE Erwin Marx Award (due December 1st), and the IEEE Peter Haas Award (due December 1st). Please see the PPST website for award criteria and nomination forms. For questions, please contact the PSST publicity chair, Heather O’Brien, at [email protected].

NPSS Award Nominations

There are an additional two annual NPSS-level awards related to pulsed power for which we invite you to consider nominating outstanding graduate students and colleagues: the Robert J Barker Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Pulsed Power Applications and Magne “Kris” Kristiansen Award for Contributions to Experimental Nuclear and Plasma Science. Both have a submission deadline of January 31st, 2025. More information is available here.
