Education Committee

New Video Library to Support NPSS Educational Activities

Stefan Ritt, EduCom Chair

The Educational Committee (EduCom) was established in 2022 as a new Functional Committee within NPSS. Its mission is to provide strategic advice to NPSS on new educational initiatives and to effectively oversee the NPSS Instrumentation Schools as a continuous, sustainable educational endeavor.

In 2024, it is managing several significant programs, including the School on Space Qualification (SSQ) 2024 in Noosa, Australia; the Rabat EduCom International Summer School (REISS) in Rabat, Morocco; the IEEE NPSS School on Medical Imaging in Jakarta, Indonesia; and the IEEE NPSS School of Environmental Radiation Measurements in Fukushima, Japan. Proposals for new activities are welcome and can be submitted through the website: https://ieee-npss.org/technical-committees/education-committee/

In addition to organizing the IEEE NPSS Schools, EduCom has launched the NPSS Video Library, accessible at: https://ieee-npss.org/videos/

This library is rapidly expanding and includes a collection of educational videos and short films of general interest. A highlight is the inspirational video from our current President, Vesna Sossi, which provides an excellent overview of NPSS and the advantages of IEEE and NPSS membership. This video is freely distributable and can also be presented at conferences, for instance. Other videos offer insights into what attendees can expect at some of our conferences, such as NSS-MIC-RTSD and the Real Time Conference.

Additionally, the library features interviews conducted by high school students with some of the most respected experts in our field. These professionals share their motivations for pursuing careers in science and engineering and discuss the influences on their paths.

The first educational video, “Picosecond Timing for Particle Physics,” instructs viewers on designing extensive timing and clock distribution systems in particle physics experiments to achieve picosecond-level precision. We are excited to soon expand our library with more videos across our various technical fields. Some of these will be freely available, while others will require NPSS membership. If you have any suggestions for additional material, please do not hesitate to contact me.
