IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences – Opportunities for Energy and Society Workshop

The IEEE Opportunities for Nuclear and Plasma Sciences for Energy and Society workshop was held on November 7th 2025 in Yokohama, Japan, bringing together experts, scholars and professionals to explore emerging directions in sustainable energy, nuclear technologies, and societal applications. The workshop aimed to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration and highlight opportunities where nuclear and plasma sciences can address energy and societal challenges.

The event featured a strong lineup of presentations, starting from Prof. Francesco Pegoraro a world expert on nuclear physics, who discussed Fusion Energy: Long‑Term Impact and Public Perception which presented long‑term transformational potential of fusion energy and the importance of managing public perception and expectations. Prof. Taiga Yamaya followed with a presentation on Sustainable Nuclear Medicine which discussed advances in imaging and radiotherapy technologies aimed at improving sustainability and patient outcomes. Dr. Laura Ravasi continued the discussion with Personalized Medicine with Custom‑Made Radioisotopes explaining how Small Modular Reactors could produce personalized medical radioisotopes for future theragnostic applications. The conversation then moved to Dr. Kazuki Ouchi who presented Uranium‑Based Battery Technology and explored the concept of large‑scale batteries based on depleted uranium, potentially turning nuclear waste into an energy resource. The workshop concluded with the presentation of Prof. John P. Verboncoeur who, in his presentation on Nuclear Beyond Energy, outlined the many non‑power applications of nuclear and plasma sciences in industry, and advanced materials.

The event was well attended with a peak number of participants at 70, and approximately 50 attendees present on average throughout the day. Each session concluded with a lively and engaging Q&A discussion, demonstrating strong interest in next‑generation nuclear systems, plasma‑based technologies, and their societal impact. All presentations are available @https://indico.global/event/15109/

After a request to repeat the presentations in a broader IEEE setting, we are pleased to announce that some talks will be featured as part of the Vancouver Section’s “Presentation Series on Nuclear Energy,” beginning December, 2025.

Looking ahead, planning is underway for a major inter‑society IEEE Workshop on Nuclear Energy and Society to be held at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign in October, 2026. This event will bring together IEEE NPSS, PES, SSIT, the Standards Association, and other societies to address nuclear energy’s technological, environmental, and social dimensions.

We thank all presenters, attendees, and local organizers for making the Yokohama workshop a success.
